Linac Hall Chill Water Filter Information

Filter Cannister Assembly

The cannister was purchased from MSC Industrial Supply, (800) 645-7270.   Order number 37022795.  This cannister features an integral, in-line, shut-off and pressure-releif valves for easy cannister replacement.  Max flow is on the order of 10 gallon/hour, and max pressure is ~ 125psi.  Fittings are 3/4" female pipe thread.  This model has a clear polycarbonate sump housing - a cheaper model w/ an opaque housing is available.

Filter size is 9 3/4" x 2 1/5" nominal.

Filter Cartridge

The cartridge was also purchased from MSC - order number 37023082.  It is constructed w/ polypropylene cord wound on a core and filters to 5 micron.  I chose it because is seemed adaquate and inexpensive, and I purchased 10 cartridges.  A 3 month maintenance interval is recommended by the manufacturer.  Others are available.

Manufacturers Instructions for Changing Filters

CAUTION
Be careful when trying to remove the sump housing.  The chill water supply lines in some places hang several feet from the main line.  One can easily bend or break the branch line by applying excessive lateral force.
  1. Turn off water supply to filter.  If unit is Valve-In-Head type (it is), rotate handle on top of housing to OFF position.
  2. Depress pressure relief button (ours is automatic - it is depressed by the ON/OFF switch in head) to relieve pressure in filter housing.
  3. Unscrew housing using a spanner wrench (I don't have one - try a strap wrench).   NOTE:  When opening filter housing to change cartridge, it is common for O-ring/Gasket to lift out of housing and stick to cap.
  4. Remove used cartridge and discard.  Rinse out housing and fill about 1/3 full with water.
  5. Remove O-ring from sump and wipe groove and O-ring clean.  Lubricate O-ring with a coating of clean petroleum jelly (Vaseline).  Place O-ring back in place and press O-ring down into the groove with two fingers.
  6. Insert a new cartridge into the sump amkeing sure that it slips down over the sump standpipe.
  7. Screw the sump onto the cap and hand tighten.  DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.  Make sure cartridge slips over the cap standpipe.
  8. Turn on the water supply slowly to allow housing to fill with water.  When using a Valve-In-Head model (like ours), rotate handle slowly to the ON position.
  9. Depress the pressure release button (if pressent) to release trappes air from filter.  (no can do w/ ours)
  10. Check for leaks before leaving installation (Duh!?!)
NOTICE:  Do not use any solvents on the polycarbonate sump housing, as this can cause it to craze and fail under pressure.
